Background information on the Yes Men, a group focused on identity correction
by Chris Pike
On May 6 at 6 p.m. international pranksters extraordinaire the Yes Men will be speaking at Dawson College in room 5.B 16.
The group is best known for spoofing major organizations like the World Trade Organization and even former President of the United States George W. Bush.
The Yes Men operate under the idea of “identity correction”. Exposing organizations’ ideologies that have been hidden by spin-doctors and turning them into what they feel is the truth.
Recently the Yes Men decided to pull a prank on the Canadian government. A fake statement issued by the Yes Men posing as Canadian Environment minister Jim Prentice pledging to cut carbon emissions by 40 per cent.
The prank exposed how awful the Conservative government’s environmental policies actually are. When the real Jim Prentice was asked about the hoax he described the entire event as “undesirable”.
The Yes Men will spend a lot of their time on Thursday talking to students about why they do what they do and how important it is to keep people in power honest about what they are doing.
A very large portion of the talk will be dedicated to a question and answer period, so students are highly encouraged to bring any of their questions to the event as the Yes Men will be doing their best to answer them.
