Cyclone in Fiji

Cyclone Tomas, a category four storm, devastated the Republic of the Fiji Islands, on March 15. According to the BBC, one death has been confirmed, however a source told the AFP that there were a “few” unconfirmed deaths. The 170km an hour winds destroyed buildings, crop and forced the closing of schools and the cancellation of international flights. 5,000 people are said to be displaced because of the cyclone.

Tax cuts for oil companies

According to The Gazette, NDP MP Nathan Cullen said last week that the Harper government’s new budget includes tax cuts for three major oil companies of at least $440 million in 2012. Cullen said the amount is more than the $357 million being spent this year for  the promotion of energy efficienty and sustainable development.
